Flavonoids have long been known to pack a punch as far as health benefits are concerned but now a recent study may have found that foods contain flavonoids may be some of the best foods to lose weight. Not only do you improve your health and well-being and fight various diseases and conditions with flavonoids but flavonoids may also be able to help with weight loss.
What are flavonoids?
Flavonoids are a group of plant nutrients (phytonutrients) which add color (red, yellow and blue) to many common foods that we eat just like carotenoids. But sometimes these colors can be covered up by the chlorophyll found in plants.
Flavonoids are extremely powerful antioxidants. This means that they help to prevent free radical damage to healthy cells which helps to prevent the development of chronic diseases such as heart disease and certain cancers. Flavonoids also help to prevent the platelets in the blood from clotting which helps to prevent heart attacks.
Foods that contain flavonoids
Flavonoids are found in the greatest quantities in onions, apples, grapes, cranberries, broccoli, green and black teas, red wines, celery and endive although they can also be found in reduced quantities in other foods such as kale, berries, citrus fruits, etc.
As mentioned previously, a recent study looked into whether foods that contain flavonoids may be the best foods to lose weight and keep it off. This study looked specifically at the effects of eating berries and apples on weight.
Researchers looked at diet, exercise and lifestyle data from more than 124,000 middle-aged and older people. They found that those who ate diets rich in flavonoid-filled foods maintained their weight better than people who didn’t, even after adjusting for smoking and fitness activities. Some even lost a little weight.
Flavonoid-rich foods include bananas, strawberries, grapes, pears, prunes, parsley, onions, peppers, green tea, celery and others. The good news is that red wine and chocolate have a bunch, too, although this study focused mostly on produce.
There are different types of flavonoids. The authors found the ones that seem to work best are called anthocyanins, which are found strawberries, cherries, blackberries, blueberries, grapes, radishes and blackcurrants. The flavonoid polymers — the ones in apples and green tea — were also beneficial as were the flavonols in tea and onions.
Earlier studies have shown that flavonoids might increase energy expenditure, decrease fat absorption and work as anti-inflammatories. They have antioxidative qualities, too.
Despite this, the researchers are not yet willing to state that flavonoid containing foods are the best foods to lose weight since this research was merely observational and there could be other factors involved in why the people in this study who consumed flavonoids gained less weight such as people who eat this way may make better health choices especially about the other food they eat besides those that contain flavonoids.
But whether flavonoids are the best foods to lose weight or not, eating more fruits and vegetables is an effective weight loss strategy and something you need to incorporate into your life if you want to lose weight. Flavonoids as well as many fruits and vegetables also help to prevent various chronic diseases and improve your overall health and well-being. Also remember that berries (especially blueberries) have been shown to be excellent for fighting belly fat.
