Stores all over sell various slimming teas, dieter’s teas and other such product but all of them basically work the same. They may seem to be effective in the short-term, but what is not seen may actually harm you in the long run.
One of the effects of drinking many of these slimming teas, dieter’s teas, etc, is that they increase bowel movement. This gives people the feeling of body cleansing. These people may get toxins out of their body but it isn’t exactly the only thing that slimming teas actually do to the body.
These teas contain various ingredients with the active ingredients being herbs which are known for their natural laxative properties. These include aloe, senna, rhubarb root, cascara, buckthorn castor oil, etc.
These are products which are derived from plants and have been used since the beginning of time because of their potency in treating constipation and to induce bowel movement. As far as weight loss, it’s important to know that there are many dangers of taking laxatives to lose weight.
Cascara, castor oil and senna are substances which are well-recognized as laxatives (especially castor oil) and easily available over the counter and are sometimes also regulated as drugs. Scientific studies however have shown that diarrhea induced by laxatives does not absorb significant amounts of calories taken in the body.
This is because various laxatives don’t act on the small intestines where most of the calories are absorbed. Instead, they perform most of their work on the large intestines. If taken in large amounts for prolonged periods, it can affect fat absorption of the body. This may lead to greasy diarrhea as well as loss of weight.
While laxatives can help every now and then, one of the dangers of taking laxatives to lose weight is that because it can seem effective for losing weight which can lead to an abuse of laxatives especially by people with an eating disorder such as bulimia and anorexia nervosa.
While weight loss can be achieved by overdosing on laxatives, the reason you shouldn’t use them to lose weight is that they may also cause permanent damage to the gastrointestinal tract and the weakening and softening of the bones, a condition which known as osteomalacia.
Those who drink these various slimming teas may actually buy these products because they are generally inexpensive and taste better than other laxatives which are available on the market. Plus they promise fast results.
Other people, such as those with eating disorders like bulimia and anorexia drink dieter’s tea because they work fast and produce watery stool and give them what they are looking for as far as weight loss.
Women may even be more susceptible to the effects of slimming teas. Although they may are not known to interfere directly with the woman’s menstrual cycle and fertility, they should watch out if drinking them causes them to rapidly shed off weight.
It’s also not safe for pregnant women to be take laxatives of any kind. Wise and responsible herbalists also discourage the use of senna and other herbal products with laxative properties for pregnant women and women who are trying to conceive.
Because of the various dangers of taking laxatives to lose weight, one should be wary about the various packaging claims because the labeling of slimming teas in the market today can be absolutely misleading. For example, they commonly refer to the laxative qualities as “natural bowel cleansing properties” and don’t specifically use the term “laxative”. Some even use the term “low-calorie” on their labeling. These products in fact, contain essentially no calories or nutrients whatsoever; unless of course they are sweetened.
Adverse effects of misusing laxatives in the form of slimming tea or other laxative products generally occur when used for longer than recommended. As mentioned, laxatives can be beneficial every now and then if you are having trouble emptying your bowels but when used for a reason like weight loss, they will have to be used for a long time which is when the dangers come in.
More dangers of taking laxatives to lose weight for long periods include but are not limited to;
- stomach cramps,
- rectal bleeding,
- electrolyte disorder and
- dehydration as well as injury and at worst, death.
It has also been reported that excessive use of stimulant laxatives causes severe constipation and pain for long periods (as much as for decades) due to the colon losing its function because laxatives interfere with the colon’s natural function of eliminating waste. When the colon is not used to eliminate waste, it normal functioning can stop. This can eventually led to surgery to remove the colon altogether.
Weight loss can be achieved but using laxatives is not the way. Sure you may achieve short-term weight loss but the many dangers of taking laxatives to lose weight far outweigh the benefits.
